New Government guidance suggests that the RIDEFREE course should be completed prior to CBT training. You can register for the course online here.
The CBT course was introduced in 1990, and it has been successful in reducing accident rates. On completion of the course you will be issued with a DL196 certificate. This certificate validates your licence, and allows you to ride a motorcycle or moped with L plates. You MUST have your licence to attend the course.
The machine you can use, and ride after completion, depends upon your age. At age 16, you may complete your CBT on, and then ride, a machine with a maximum engine size of 50cc, and capable of reaching speeds of no more than 28 miles per hour. At 17+ you can choose to ride up to 125cc maximum. More information regarding licence categories is available here.
The CBT course consists of 5 modules:
You will be required to demonstrate sufficient understanding and competence at each level before progressing to the next stage. The full course can be completed in a one day, but this depends on individual ability. If further training is required, beyond one day, an additional fee will be payable. The CBT certificate (DL196) is valid for 2 years from the date you complete the course.
CBT is NOT a test that you will pass or fail - it is a course of training designed to prepare you for riding unaccompanied on the road, whilst practising for your practical tests.
BOOKING REQUIREMENTS
ON THE DAY
You are advised to bring your own helmet, jacket and gloves where possible - we have only a limited supply of hire kit available, and not in every size!. Please wear suitable clothing. The road hurts, and there is no getting away from the fact that falling off is a possibility - jogging bottoms and trainers WILL NOT save your skin. We suggest a decent pair of jeans (no rips or holes) as a minimum, and sturdy footwear that covers your ankles (no steel toecaps).
If you arrive without your licence, or do not meet the required eyesight standard, your course will not go ahead - and no refund will be offered. If you are inappropriately dressed, you will not be able to handle or ride a bike - again, no refund will be offered.
